McConaghey, Lithgow, Foy and Chalamet do a baseball scene for Interstellar in Okotoks
Sources tell me there were around 300 locals in attendance filling the stands as extras. Matthew McConaughey, John Lithgow, Mackenzie Foy and Timothée Chalamet filmed a scene that had the characters watching a baseball game between the hometown team and the New York Yankees.
McConaughey needs no introduction and if you saw one of the greatest movies of the 80s (Harry and the Hendersons) John Lithgow doesn't need one either. Foy and Chalamet are both newbs because of their age. Foy is most famous for playing the vampire spawn child in the last Twilight movie and Chalamet for his role as Finn Walden in Homeland (RIP Finn).
Christopher Nolan's sets/films are usually completely locked-down and hush-hush, but was not the case with the scene that was filmed today. Spectators surrounded the field and even came right up to the stands next to the crew according to my source. John Lithgow went over and chatted with the fans in between takes. My source tells me that because they were using a public space the crew was not allowed to send the spectators away.
The extras sported a subdued colour palate while holding boxes of popcorn and the uniforms of the players looked like they were from the 30s or 40s. Since the movie is suspected to be about time travel, one would assume this was because they went back in time.
At the end of the scene the crowd in the stands and the actors make a hurried exit from the stadium after looking behind them and seeing a big cloud of dust coming in their direction. My source said they could see giant fans on a hill creating the cloud. Thrilling stuff. They also filmed a scene with school kids and boys playing little league.
Interstellar is being filmed in various locations between Calgary and Lethbridge and is scheduled to wrap in early September.
Side Note: I asked my sources why they didn't snap a photo like this one and they said that those pictures were taken while Matt was coming out of the bathroom and that thought that was (and I quote) "Awkward as f-ck". Agreed.
