Smash, was it?

I love musicals, theatre, Broadway...the whole shebang, but did I love Smash? I am cautious to give it a 'yay' or 'nay' based on the pilot alone. Sure, it could get better. It could not be what I feel like it is right now...a long version of any dance, music, or theatre based movie I have ever seen in my life.

A girl from a small State, preferably mid-west (Iowa, check) moves to big city to be famous (New York, check). Is down on her luck because she hasn't scored the starring role, the lead dance number or been signed by a record label within her first week on the street (multiple auditions - no role yet, check). Gets her big opportunity and is about to be transformed over night into the biggest sensation ever (well...we don't know this yet, it's a TV series - they need it to last more than 2 hours).

So yeah, we have seen it before...but I am not sure what the Smash producers are going to do with the show. They can't go the same old route or the series will be over next week.

Do they give Karen (Katharine McPhee) the lead role right out of the gate and crush the dreams of the other actress, Ivy, who has been at it for a long time? The commercials for this show made it seem so simple: Karen was the good character while Ivy (Megan Hilty) was the villain...but that doesn't seem to be the case. I feel an understudy/lead role plot line coming along with either a best friend story line or extreme cat fight between blondie and Ms. Iowa.

I am not really hooked on the story, but I am curious enough to watch it again and see what I get. I would like to get something with a little more BANG...I felt it dragging at any point where there wasn't a musical number.

So Smash, we will try again next week and I hope you impress me, and the rest of the world, if only for Debra Messing's sake - broad needs a come back.
