University of Calgary Student Nathan Kotylak, Cop Car Fire Starter

Original Posted June 17, 2011 3:46PM
Can we please stop talking about the Vancouver Riots already?!?! (ok, in one second...)

I was over it, until I found out that an income student from my Alma Mater, the University of Calgary, was one of the people who set a police car on fire during that gong show that burned a huge hole in Vancouver's reputation.

This particular student (Nathan Kotylak) is, as far as I am aware, an incoming athlete on the University's Water Polo team and attending the school on a scholarship given to him by Water Polo Canada, on the Canadian Jr. National team and an Olympic hopeful.

Disgrace - not only for my school, but for the sport, the national team and his family. This is worse than when Dr. Tom Flanagan (UofC professor) went on national television and called for the assassination of Julian Assange. (Oh Tom, you old fool).

Many of my fellow alumna now call Vancouver home and are outraged with the connection of their school to the destruction of their city. Some are calling for his scholarship to be revoked and his acceptance to the school to be terminated. I agree. I knew a kid once who got kicked out of the UofC for making a porno in his dorm room. What is it that they say...Make love, not war?

One of my co-workers disagrees because it will "ruin his life"....um, the kid set a COP CAR ON FIRE. In what universe does that not ruin your life already? I am going to be surprised if he does not go to jail.

I was recently copied on an email sent by a UofC Alumni now living in Vancouver to the University of Calgary's Dean of Kinesiology and the Director of the Dino's Athletics. I would be surprised if their inboxes didn't have a larger than normal influx today...you can read the letter here.

UPDATE June 17: Water Polo Canada has released a statement saying that they have suspended a member of their Jr. National Team due to their involvement in the Vancouver Riots on Wednesday. They said that the player "...has contacted [them], through his legal counsel, to indicate that he will cooperate fully with the disciplinary process.” Good.

UPDATE 2: Kotylak made a public apology to the press yesterday. Man...that kid is an ugly crier.

XOXO
Jes...

  2. How are you sure the person shown in the photo is the same as the person named in the media when, by your own account, the person has yet to attend UC and you have never met/seen him in person? Do you have some other information we don't know about? There has not yet been any conclusive proof that the person in the photo is the person you named - its just people repeating unverified stuff they read on the net. I'm not defending the guy - he should pay hard for what he did, but I'm trying to confirm that its actually the correct person.

  3. It's in the actual news. Comments have been made from his father and close friends. It is without a doubt the same guy. Do a little research.

  5. The kid already has a media team and lawyer's hired for him. Good to be rich! Clearly an act of terrorism on the citizen's of Vancouver and need's to be treated harshly. There is no way any taxpayer dollars should be going towards his training or education, quite the reverse. He owes this city an apology, some time in a cell and a great deal of community service.

  6. Well he is a rich kid with a father who will have a whole string of lawyers to get him off, now if he was a poor minority kid, he would no doubt be taken down to the water front and publicly executed, but because he is rich and the family no doubt has connections he will likely be mayor of Vancouver in the future....

  7. Nothing is going to happen to this kid. Nothing ever happens to anyone with money. The University of Calgary is going to get a mysterious donation, the alleged perp will look and sound contrite and make all the right noises, but at the end of the day, he's still going to school, he'll still be on the water polo team, and Vancouverites can continue to pretend they're all just wonderful people.

  8. as i have said before watch his apology there is not a tear in his eyes and he is apologising to his parents and calgary not vancover and seems more worried about his tarnished reputation then the fact that he commited a crime because arson or attempted arson are punishable by law
