Top 5: Reasons you may not vote, and why they suck

It's election day (again) in Canada. Last election only 58% of Canadians cast a ballot. That is sad peeps, really f-cking sad. So for this election let's get out to the polls and vote. If you are over 18 and are a Canadian citizen then you have no reason not to.

Here are a few excuses you MAY hear...and how to combat those f-ckers who are trying to get out of making a decision.

I have to work...
Well so do I! Did you know that legally your employer has to let you have time off work if, while not working, you don't have 3 consecutive hours to be at the polls. So find out when your polls close and if you can't make it because of work you get off early....that should be reason enough to vote.

I don't know who to vote for...
SERIOUSLY...can this excuse still be valid? We have elections every other year in this country and the top parties have not deviated very much for their platforms. So unless you are living in the backwoods and have no access to the media AT ALL then you should know something. You can also use CBC's voting compass as a tool to find out which party you align with.

I am not registered...
Do you have a drivers license or a passport? Do you have a piece of mail (bank statement, power bill, etc) with your name and address on it? If you said yes to those two you don't need to be registered. You just have to show up to the polling station in your neighbourhood with these two pieces and you can vote. Even HOMELESS people can vote if they have some documentation from a shelter that they have stayed there. For reals.

There is going to be another minority government so why even bother...
Well if everyone with that kind of attitude went and voted maybe we WOULDN'T have another minority gov...and then we wouldn't have to spend millions of dollars every couple of years on these elections.

My party isn't going to win...
If your party is Green, then yes I agree...BUT maybe if they got a seat in the house you would be able to see Elizabeth May have a throw down in the election debate next time around. (Currently the Green party is not in the debates because they do not hold a seat in the house...this could change).

I am currently nursing a Royal Wedding/Osama Bin Laden hangover and I need to sleep...
F-ck off, stop being lazy.

Get out and Vote Canada!

UPDATE: Polls say that only 61% of the eligible voters voted in today's election. Disappointing. The young people did come out in droves though...the proof is in the rise of the NDP as the official opposition getting 104 seats in the house. Iggy stepped down as leader of the Liberals after they got killed with only 30 some odd seats. Elizabeth May made history getting elected in her riding giving the first ever seat to the Green Party.  Gilles Duceppe and the Bloc have been replaced by the NDP in Quebec and only got 2 seats in the house, Duceppe resigned as well. Stephen Harper proved that 4th time's a charm and won a majority government with 166 seats.

XOXO
Jes...
