JUNO Nominee Meaghan Smith...Am I Her Fairy Godmother?

I spoke with Canadian singer Meaghan Smith about a year ago. She was just starting her very first headlining tour after opening for the likes of Chantal Kreviazuk and now she has been nominated for New Artist of the Year at the 2011 Juno Awards. Things are looking good.

When we last spoke Meaghan had mentioned that her dream duet would be working with the song writer/producer named Linda Perry (who worked with the likes of Christina Aguilera, Gwen Stefani, James Blunt etc.)...then a couple months later...BAM. She is doing a song with Linda Perry. How serendipitous. So let's see if we can do this again. Meaghan tells me what she wants and like a fairy godmother I make dreams come true.

To test this theory I asked her who she would like to do a song with and her response was Canadian hip-hop artist Buck 65. Now in case you forgot, Meaghan sings songs that would fall in the category of an Amy Winehouse or other music that has an old flavour to it.  Mixing that would hip-hop could be super dope...and amazing...and probably the best thing you have ever heard. (Did I sell it? Did I?!)

So music gods, let's get this shit together and make some lovely music.  Meaghan was a little specific so I would like to quote what she would like, "I want to sing a song with Buck 65. has to be a duet. It can't be me singing and then him having his rapping section of the has to all be part of one thing." Got it? Ok good. Fairy dust sprinkled. Moving on.

The reason for this interview was to talk about the fact that Meaghan received her first Juno nomination. She said that this is the biggest nomination that she has ever received...she has also made the Polaris prize list and had three East Coast Award nominations. She was so busy that she didn't even know that the nominations were happening and she found out via a mass influx of emails from friends congratulating her.

She has met the other nominees in her category and said that she is really excited and said, "I feel really positive about the whole thing....if I don't [win] I will be really happy for the person who does...if they win, I will be like "That's my friend!""  Which is a very Canadian mind set if you ask me...totally fits with the Juno Awards.

I don't know if Meaghan will win she didn't ask her fairy godmother directly if she could win the Juno.  It was pharsed like..."I would like to win a Juno, just kidding."  So fairy godmother will just leave it up to fate.

Good luck tonight Meaghan and all the nominees.

UPDATE: Hum...guess who won New Artist of the Year tonight at the Junos? The one and only Meaghan Smith.

UPDATE 2: Guess who recorded Baby It's Cold Outside for her Christmas album with Buck 65? Do I really need to tell you?!

Meaghan singing a Pixies cover. Love it.
