In Review: Seussical the Musical

Last night Seussical the Musical opened at Alberta Theatre Projects. I was a little apprehensive about the show...since it is clearly a show meant for kids...it's f-cking Dr. Seuss for crying out loud.  But I am happy to say I didn't want to poke my eyes out, I didn't even want to strangle the kids in the audience. I was entertained.

Why was I entertained? Well, it may have been Dave Kelly, former Calgary Breakfast Television host turned Cat in the Hat. His little improv segments throughout the show were masterful. His interpretation of the Cat made me want to say "suck on THAT Mike Myers" (who played the Cat in the Hat in the film adaptation which I hated, which was another reason why I thought I may want to cut myself during this show).

OR maybe it was because there was so much stuff in the show that I thought "um, I can't believe this is in a show for kids!" It's not like there was fully blown nudity or anything (unfortunately) and I didn't see any of the people with kids there get up and leave (again, unfortunately), but I was loving the questionable content.

Content included: plastic surgery and a jab a Joan Rivers ("remember kids, only take one"), alcohol abuse, a slutty bitch who got knocked up and abandon her child, and a pill popping tree.  All you needed was someone dying and you would have had a show made for prime time, but alas...there was no putting little Jojo out of his misery.

You just need to take one look at the poster to know that your kids, nieces, nephews or the kid down the block would love the show...I am basically telling you that you would love the show too. Hell, I didn't even take a kid with me (based on the general rule that I despise children)...I took 3 of my best hooker friends and they loved the show (more than I did obviously, but that's because my cold stone heart won't let me fully love anything).

For more information about Seussical the Musical and tickets go here. Seussical runs from now until December 30.

XOXO
Jes...
